Approaching Junctions To Turn Left

The three free videos below are taken from The Learner Driving Guide’s Automatic Syllabus.

The Automatic Syllabus includes 75 videos with detailed commentary, spread over our 42 comprehensive lessons. Our lessons include planners and images of all driving manoeuvres, teaching you step-by-step. Each lesson identifies tips for you to use and potential hazards to look out for.
Everything in the DVSA syllabus is covered; helping you to pass the practical driving test and become a calm, confident and safe driver for life.

This section will help you learn how to approach major to minor, 8-car plan, open or closed junctions, to turn left.

Q: How do I safely turn my car left into a new road?

A: You must first gain the knowledge and understanding of who has priority on the road you are on. In this situation, this is called major to minor.

Watching the videos below, you will gain a great understanding of how the road works and who has priority, keeping all road users and pedestrians safe. You will also be shown how to plan your approach in a calm and organised manner, as well as learning about mirror checking, braking, points of turn, full-lock steering and observation skills.

Tips

Always give yourself enough time to plan your junction. Please make the best use of your mirrors to see what is around you at all times. Always make your decisions early by looking at junctions for road markings, parked cars, any pedestrians and where they may be intending to cross.

Dangers

Not giving yourself enough time on approach will lead to panic and subsequent mistakes, that could lead to accidents. Not signalling at the right time will mislead other road users. Braking too hard or too late may lead to a loss of control of your vehicle and can impact on vehicles around you.
